GED Testing

Montcalm Community College is an official GED Testing Center. Following is information about eligibility requirements, testing days and times, special accommodations, test descriptions, and learning about your test results.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR GED TESTING AT MONTCALM COMMUNITY COLLEGE (ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT MUST BE MET BEFORE REGISTERING FOR TESTING):

  1. Complete a GED Registration form (in person) in Counseling & Career Services, located in the Administration/Library Building. GED registration days and hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
  2. Present current photo identification (Driver's License, Michigan ID, Passport, etc.)
  3. Provide official evidence of date of your graduating class and/or date of last attendance at "regular" school if less than eighteen (18) years of age at the time of application.
  4. Pay the testing fee of $100.00 for the battery of five tests (testing fee must be paid when registering for testing).*
  • No one will be admitted for testing without advanced registration confirmation.
  • The number of individuals to be tested in any session is limited.
  • A 48-hour cancellation notice is required. If this notice is not received, there will be a $25 rescheduling fee.

*If an agency or school will pay your testing fee, you must submit a written verification form from that agency or school stating they they will be responsible for the testing fee. Testing fee effective January 2002 and subject to change without notice.

TESTING DAYS AND TIMES

You will be assigned two test dates at the time you register for testing. You will take test one (1 - Language Arts, Writing) and three (3 - Mathematics) on one test date and tests two (2 - Language Arts, Reading), four (4 - Science), and five (5 - Social Studies) on the other test date.

If you are unable to keep your testing date(s), you must cancel by calling (989) 328-1266 at least 48 hours in advance. If you do not cancel your testing date(s), a $25.00 rescheduling fee will be charged.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS

If you have a documented disability that might interfere with your ability to fully demonstrate what you know under standard testing conditions, there are options for special accommodations. If you wish to request special accommodations, please call (989) 328-1266 for more information.

TEST DESCRIPTIONS

Test 1 -- Language Arts, Writing
(2 hours)

 

75 minutes to complete 50 multiple choice questions and 45 minutes to write an essay. The test covers sentence structure, usage, and grammar, as well as business communications and "how to"-texts.

   

Test 2 -- Language Arts, Reading
(65 minutes)

 

40 multiple choice items. 75% covers literary texts (one poem and one piece of drama will be represented) and 25% covers nonfiction.

   

Test 3 -- Mathematics
(90 minutes)

 

There are 50 questions - most are multiple choice, but about 20% of the questions are not. Calculators are allowed during the first 45 minutes of the test and will be provided by the examiner. Scratch paper will be provided. Tested on algebra, geometry, number relations, and data analysis. A formula page is provided in the test booklet.

   

Test 4 -- Science
(80 minutes)

 

50 multiple choice items. The test covers earth science (including space science), physics, chemistry, and biological science with a focus on the personal relevance.

   

Test 5 -- Social Studies
(70 minutes)

 

50 multiple choice items. The test covers civics, history, economics, government, geography with both textual and visual sources, as well as a practical document, such as voter's guide or a tax form etc. At least one excerpt from U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Federalist Papers, or landmark supreme court cases.

Note: All testing materials, including pencils and calculators, will be provided by the examiner.

LEARNING ABOUT YOUR TEST RESULTS

  1. Scores are reported only after all five tests are completed unless you are retesting.
  2. Once all tests have been scored, you will be mailed an Official Transcript of GED Test Results and a letter stating a passing or failing score.**
  3. Test Scores and pass/fail information will NOT be given over the telephone to anyone at anytime.

**The Michigan Department of Career Development will issue and mail your certificate directly to you in eight to ten weeks. If you have questions about your certificate, contact the GED State Administrator at (517) 373-1692.

RETESTING

  1. If you have successfully completed the GED testing, no retesting will be allowed.
  2. Retesting will normally be offered after a six (6) month period has elapsed. Exceptions to this will be at the discretion of the Chief Examiner.
  3. The option to retest will normally be extended to individuals who verify that they have completed instruction in the area(s) they wish to retest in.
  4. A retest fee of $20 is charged per single test in the battery.

MICHIGAN GED TESTING JURISDICTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Title of State Credential: High School Equivalency Certificate
  2. Requirements for Issuance of Certificate:
    1. Minimum Test Scores: For ALL LANGUAGE editions (i.e., English, Spanish and French) of the GED test, a standard score of 410 on each of the five tests and an average standard score of 450 for all five tests is required.
    2. Minimum Age: 18 years of age and class of which applicant would have been a member must have graduated. Individuals who are graduates of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, National Guard Michigan Youth Challenge Program qualify for a Michigan GED certificate if they are at least 16 years of age, and successfully complete all GED tests in accordance with Michigan jurisdictional score requirements.
    3. High Schools are authorized to issue high school diplomas or certificates on the basis of the GED test to adult residents provided applicants meet the following requirements:
      1. Minimum Test Scores: A standard score of 410 on each of the five tests and an average standard score of 450 on all five tests.
      2. Minimum Age: None, but diplomas or certificates will not be granted ahead of the time applicants would have received the credentials had they remained in school, except for Michigan Youth Challenge Program graduates.
      3. Residence: Must be a former student or present resident of the school district from which the diploma or certificate of equivalency is sought; residents in a non-high school district may apply to the high school serving the particular district.
      4. Previous High School Enrollment: The local high school may require a year or more of previous high school enrollment in addition to attaining the minimum test scores on the GED test.
  3. Minimum Age for Testing:
    1. Individuals who are at least 16 years of age and have been out of a regular school program for one calendar year may be tested. The calendar year waiting requirement may be waived if it is in the best interest of the individual as determined by a school district's superintendent or designee and parent/guardian and is in accordance with State approved GED testing center guidelines. A GED testing center must retain documentation of this waiver requirement signed by the student, parent/guardian and school district's superintendent or designee. This documentation shall include language that GED testing is in the best interest of the examinee and has been approved by the above-mentioned signatories.
    2. Michigan National Guard Youth Challenge Program graduates who are at least 16 years of age and no longer enrolled in high school are eligible for testing upon completion of the program.
    3. Applicants for induction into the U.S. Armed Forces who are age 17 may be admitted to testing, provided a written request is made by the recruiting office of any branch of the Armed Forces stating that the applicant has met all military requirements for induction except for GED test scores, and provided request is accompanied by letter or written statement signed by the local school official stating that the individual has left school and that it would probably be in the best interest of the person to be admitted to testing and, also, a letter of permission for induction from the applicant's parent or guardian is furnished.
  4. Requirements for Retesting: Retesting is at discretion of the chief examiner, however, applicants are counseled to enroll in preparatory programs and it is recommended that six months should have elapsed before retesting.
  5. Method of Applying: No State application is required. Testing scores and applicant information is obtained directly from GED Testing Centers and GED High School Equivalency certificates are mailed when applicants meet all requirements.
  6. Official Transcripts: Test scores are accepted as official only when reported directly by:
    1. Official GED Testing Centers
    2. Transcript Service of the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)
    3. GED Testing Service.
  7. Fees:
    1. Testing fees at Official GED Testing centers varies and there is no fee for a certificate.
    2. An official report of GED test scores may be obtained from the GED testing centers. Transcript cost information is available from each test center.
    3. Duplicate certificates are not issued.
