Two Montcalm Community College instructors were honored during the college’s 46th Annual Commencement ceremony on May 3 in the Central Montcalm High School gymnasium.

Board of Trustees’ Chairperson Karen Carbonelli presented awards to one full-time and one part-time faculty member in recognition of their noteworthy work with and on behalf of students, scholarly or professional achievement and service to MCC.

The Leslie K. Morford Faculty Recognition Award, named for MCC emeritus instructor Morford, was presented posthumously to Business Instructor Bob Campbell who passed away in September 2012. Mathematics Instructor Kenneth Parker received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. The recipients were given a plaque, a stipend and a citation.

It is the second time that Campbell earned this award – the first time was in 1995. Campbell began teaching accounting and business courses part time at MCC in 1985, while he was working as an accountant. During that time, Campbell realized his passion for teaching, and in 1987, he became a full-time business instructor at the college. In his teaching philosophy, Campbell discussed serving his students by treating them with respect, having concern for their welfare and challenging them to achieve their full potential. His students heralded him as an exceptional instructor who inspired them to learn. They thanked him for making a “potentially very dry subject fun” and looked forward to learning more from him in future classes.

“During the fall semester, we lost a great friend and colleague,” said MCC Vice President for Student and Academic Affairs Rob Spohr. “Bob passed away at the beginning of fall semester, during his 27th year of service to MCC. Bob loved MCC, loved his family, loved his colleagues, loved the community, but most of all he loved students. We also loved him.”

Members of Campbell’s family were presented the award and the honorarium that accompanies the award was donated to the MCC Foundation Robert E. Campbell Memorial Scholarship fund.

Montcalm Community College Board of Trustees Chairperson Karen Carbonelli presented the 2013 Leslie K. Morford Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award to part-time mathematics Instructor Kenneth Parker, during the college’s commencement ceremony on May 3.

Parker, of Belmont, has served as a part-time mathematics instructor since 2003. His students commend him for the confidence he instills in them, his kind and thorough instruction and the care and concern he has for each one. Parker is said to possess the unusual ability to help his students “fall in love with math in particular, and learning in general.” His goal is his students’ understanding and practical use of knowledge. In addition to his classroom expertise, Parker is the founder of the Sidney Stars Base Ball Club, and has organized the Vintage Base Ball games for the annual Montcalm Heritage Festival. Parker has also served in community outreach and as a student club advisor.
