Susan Carol McCarthy was born and raised in the rolling grovelands of pre-Disney Florida. The daughter of independent citrus growers, she recalls “picking fruit, packing bushel baskets and pouring fresh-squeezed orange juice for the tourists who stopped by my family’s packing house” on Florida’s heavily-traveled Route 441.
“Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands” is a fictional depiction of some real life events from McCarthy’s childhood.
Luanne Feutz of Trufant met McCarthy when the author made a previous Michigan visit.
“She is a marvelous woman – just a charming person,” Feutz said of McCarthy. “She tells the story so eloquently. When she told what parts of the book are really true, it made it more real to me. She talks about hate crimes and tolerance, and she brings it into today’s terms.”
Everyone is invited to meet McCarthy on Oct. 9. McCarthy offers a book signing from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 9 in MCC’s Activities Building on the college’s Sidney campus. From 7 to 9 p.m., McCarthy offers a presentation at the Greenville High School Performing Arts Center in Greenville, where she will discuss the book and entertain questions from the audience. |
