Q. How do I know when to register?
Answer. Check the first few pages of the semester schedule, sometimes referred to as "the mailer". You will find registration dates and options listed there.
Q. What classes should I register for?
Answer. You should meet with an MCC counselor to determine which courses to take. Before you do this, you should complete either the Compass or ASSET test. To make an appointment to meet with a counselor, call 989-328-1231.
Q. How do I know when I'm registered for classes?
Answer. You have completed the registration process when you have turned in your completed registration form to Enrollment Services and paid for or made payment arrangements (such as, financial aid or credit terms) to pay for your classes.
Q. I haven't taken the Compass or ASSET test. Can I still take classes?
Answer. You may take classes if the ones you register for don't have test score prerequisites. However, MCC does require that students pursuing a program of study complete all three modules of either the ASSET or Compass test prior to registration for their second semester. Criteria for exemption from testing are listed on the testing information page of the semester schedule.
Q. Who is exempt from taking the Compass or ASSET test?
Answer. Those who have previously completed either of these tests successfully, attained the required ACT score, hold a bachelor's or other advanced degrees, are aged 60 or over or are auditing classes are exempt from testing.
Q. When can I meet with a counselor?
Answer. To make an appointment to meet with a counselor, call 989-328-1231. If your desire is for assistance in selecting your courses, it is best if you complete Compass or ASSET testing prior to your appointment. If you are transferring to MCC from another college or university, it helpful to have your transcripts received and evaluated by MCC prior to this appointment.
Q. What if I don't know what occupation I want to pursue?
Answer. We have several resources available to assist you in the decision-making process. Call Counseling & Career Services at 989-328-1231 for more information.
Q. How do I know what books to buy? Where do I buy them?
Answer. You may buy your books at the MCC Bookstore, located on campus in the Activities Building. The store has the books arranged by course and instructor. Bring your printed schedule (the one you received when you paid for your classes) along when you buy your books. Bookstore personnel will be happy to assist you if you need help locating the books you need.
Q. Where will my classes meet?
Answer. Check your printed schedule (the one you received when you paid for your classes) for the location. The building name and room number will be printed for all classes that meet on campus. Off-campus classes may note a location, but not a room number. When you report to an off-campus location, directions to the class should be posted at the door. When scheduling your classes, use the legend on the back inside page of your semester schedule book if you are uncertain of the location code listed by the course listing.
Answer. You may adjust your schedule during the drop/add period following the beginning of the semester. The dates of drop/add are posted each semester. During this time, you may drop classes or add courses. You can also change sections of the same course; for example, you could switch from a daytime section of Freshman English I to an evening section. It's a good idea to check with a counselor and Financial Aid (if you are receiving financial aid) before changing courses. After the end of drop/add you can withdraw from a course, if necessary. Early or late start courses have different drop/add dates than those that begin during the regular semester.
Q. What if I need help with my classes?
Answer. If you experience difficulty in any of your courses, the first person to contact is your instructor. He or she may refer you for tutoring. The tutoring office is located in room D318. You can stop in or call 989-328-1264 to get more information. You may also wish to speak with a counselor; stop Counsleing & Career Services or call 989-328-1231 to make an appointment.
