Explore health, wellness during July 24 Senior Citizen’s Day at MCC

Discover senior citizen’s fitness opportunities during the Montcalm Community College Recreation & Fitness Center’s first Senior Citizen’s Day, July 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Activities Building on the college’s Sidney campus.

MCC Recreation Coordinator John Davis said several sessions and activities are planned to highlight opportunities for senior citizens and other users at the college’s Recreation & Fitness Center.

“We have worked very hard to develop programming to fit the needs of all of our various users,” Davis said, “including a special emphasis on activities and programs specially designed for senior citizens of all skill levels.

“Throughout the day, we’ll highlight changes and new offerings aimed at engaging the senior citizen’s population,” he said.

The MCC Recreation & Fitness Center offers classes specifically for senior citizens with emphasis on aerobics and strength training, as well as open gym, fitness center and pool hours, with options for one-on-one instruction.

“We have adopted more of a personal approach to health, fitness and happiness,” Davis said. “During Senior Citizen’s Day, we want to get to know people and learn more about their needs while offering an overview of some of the programs and services we are developing.”

Senior Citizen’s Day activities include:

10 a.m. – Get an introduction to pickleball, badminton and cornhole.

11 a.m. – Learn about the risks and dangers of high blood pressure and receive a free blood pressure screening.

12 p.m. – Enjoy lunch at MCC’s Woodside Café. The cost is $5.

12:30 p.m. – Learn about upcoming events on the Kenneth J. Lehman Nature Trails on MCC’s Sidney campus.

1 p.m. – View ancient treasures from around the world and learn about other benefits available to the community in the MCC Library.

1:30 p.m. – Learn about MCC’s personal enrichment courses, Lifelong Learners program and over 60 scholarship.

1:45 p.m. – Tour MCC’s Sidney campus and have time to visit the recreation facilities.

Visitors may stay for the entire event or participate in only the sessions of interest to them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults can obtain significant health benefits with a moderate amount of physical activity. Studies have shown that maintaining regular physical activity can help prevent many common diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. Exercise improves overall immune function, which is important for seniors as their immune systems are often compromised.

“We’re really focusing on a hands-on personal approach to determine how we can help people,” Davis said. “We are helping people set goals and putting together personal workout programs. We have a lot of people who are excited about it and really enjoying our facilities.”
