MCC offers a variety of noncredit classes in February

 

Expand your art skills, have fun singing, learn CPR, explore local history, learn Spanish and more during Montcalm Community College’s February career development and personal enrichment courses.

Art & Music

Do you want to improve your drawing and painting skills? In the “Art Basics” course you will review the basics of drawing and painting, learn sketching techniques, explore color mixing and brush control with acrylic paints and become confident in your abilities. At the end of this four-week class, you will create one final project using the skills learned in previous lessons. This class is for those age 16 and older. Classes are on Wednesdays from Feb. 23 to March 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. on MCC’s Greenville Campus. This class is taught by Sue Moss, and the cost is $44.

Children in kindergarten through sixth-grade can learn basic art techniques as well as art appreciation and create new and beautiful projects in the course “Art Academy.” This course is designed to foster creativity and imagination within children, and each week they will explore different art media such as charcoal, pen and ink, acrylic paint, watercolor, pastel and mixed media. The classes are on Wednesdays from Feb. 23 through March 9 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on MCC’s Greenville campus. This class is taught by Sue Moss, and the cost is $30.

The MCC Alumni and Friends Choir is a community and student non-audition choir that welcomes everyone, high school age and older, who have an interest in singing in a choral group. Practices for the spring concert are Wednesdays and Saturdays from Feb. 16 through April 6 on MCC’s Greenville campus. Wednesday rehearsals are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday rehearsals are from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The cost is $15. The spring performance of G.F. Handel’s Messiah Parts 2 & 3 (Lent and Easter portion) is April 9 at 7 p.m. at the Greenville High School Performing Arts Center.

Health

“Babysitter Heartsaver CPR” is an instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback and guide the students’ learning of skills. The class is on Feb. 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. on MCC’s Greenville Campus. The course fee of $75 includes the cost of the book, mask and card.

The “First Aid” course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in first aid. First aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies and environmental emergencies are covered. The class is Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on MCC’s Sidney Campus. This class is taught by Jason Zamarron, and the cost is $65.

Miscellaneous

Explore the historic schools of Alma, Ithaca, St. Louis, and Gratiot County’s 16 townships in “Historic Schools of Gratiot County.” The class is Feb. 14 and 16 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on MCC’s Greenville Campus. This class is taught by Dana Kenneth Johnson, and the cost is $29.

Explore the historic schools of Ionia, Lake Odessa, Portland, Saranac and Ionia County’s 16 townships in “Historic Schools of Ionia County.” The class is Feb. 21 and 23 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on MCC’s Greenville Campus. This class is taught by Dana Kenneth Johnson, and the cost is $29.

In “Conversational Spanish” you will learn simple conversational exchanges that occur during travel and everyday situations, as well as vocabulary appropriate to selected topics and about Hispanic culture. The classes are Mondays from Feb. 21 to March 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. on MCC’s Sidney Campus. This class is taught by Juan Granados, and the cost is $75.

Explore the historic schools of Grand Rapids, Sparta, Cedar Springs and Kent County’s 24 townships in “Historic Schools of Kent County.” The class is Feb. 28 and March 2 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on MCC’s Greenville Campus. This class is taught by Dana Kenneth Johnson, and the cost is $29.
