Montcalm Community College recently recognized five students for their creative writing efforts in the college’s annual Creative Writing Contest.

Students submitted poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction entries.

Hannah Underhill, of Blanchard, won first place for poetry with "Our Last Lover’s Robe.” Amber Ridgeway, of Greenville, earned second place with her poem, “Here’s the Call.”

Isabel Schuster, of Howard City, won first place in the short fiction category with “Stage Fright.” Kennedy Betancourt, of Fenwick, placed second with “Headache.”

In the creative non-fiction category, Amber Ridgeway, of Greenville, placed first with “Alive: A Story Still Going.” Hailey MacMillen, of Greenville, placed second with “My Good Hair Day.”

First- and second-place winners received a cash prize, and their entries will be submitted as MCC’s entries to the statewide Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Creative Writing Contest, where they will compete with entries from Michigan’s 28 community colleges. The winning entries and the judge’s comments may be viewed on the MCC Writing Center’s writing contest web page at montcalm.edu/writing-contest.

The contest was judged by MCC emeritus English Instructor Dr. Joel R. Brouwer.
