Montcalm Community College recently recognized eight students for their creative writing efforts in the college’s annual Creative Writing Contest.

Students submitted fiction, essay, and poetry entries.

Royce Spencer, of Greenville, won first place for poetry with “Breath of Wind.” And Paige Walker, of Riverdale, earned second place with her poem, “Anxiety.”

Christina Schafer, of Carson City, won first place in the fiction category with “Some Things Are Better Left Untouched,” and Gabe Rodriguez, of Greenville, won placed second with “Glare.”

Schafer also swept the essay category earning first place with “Enbridge Line 5: the Environmental, Ethical, and Economic Effects” and second place with “Climate Change: Don’t Isolate the Fight.”

First- and second-place winners received a cash prize, and their entries will be submitted as MCC’s entries to the statewide Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Creative Writing Contest, where they will compete with entries from Michigan’s 28 community colleges.
