Montcalm Community College presented its Alden Perkins Dedicated Service Award to Serena Houseman during the college’s recent holiday celebration.

Houseman joined MCC in 1998. She began as an Instructional Science Lab Assistant, later transitioning to Natural Science Lab Associate, then Instructional Services Assistant in Guest Services and Community Outreach Coordinator. In 2013, she moved to her current role as Administrative Assistant for Academic Affairs. In addition to her full-time employment at the college, Houseman has enjoyed teaching noncredit computer classes and assisting students as a tutor and as a conductor in the MCC Express program.

While announcing the award, MCC President Dr. Stacy H. Young said Houseman received glowing nominations from her co-workers.

“Serena has been noted to be a hard worker, shows a high level of dedication, seeks to find better ways to work, demonstrates care for colleagues and frequently volunteers to help wherever needed,” Dr. Young said. “She has also been noted to have high standards, responds quickly to questions or needs from others and thinks outside of the box to find solutions.

“One person said Serena has excelled in every position she has held and always does more than is expected. She is truly committed to the college,” Dr. Young said.

“Personally, in my work with Serena, she has always provided me with information quickly and is extremely helpful,” Dr. Young added.

Houseman was appreciative of receiving the award.

“I am honored to be recognized,” Houseman said. “I work with a lot of great individuals and to have them select me as this year’s recipient means a lot to me.”

The award recognizes dedicated service to MCC, commitment to high standards of work performance, care and concern for the public and fellow employees, and creativity and innovation. The MCC Board of Trustees initiated the award in 1986 as a posthumous tribute to Perkins, the college’s former Bursar.
