Two Montcalm Community College instructors were honored during the college’s 52nd Annual Commencement ceremony on May 3 in the gymnasium on the college’s Sidney campus.

Board of Trustees’ Chairperson Karen Carbonelli presented awards to one full-time and one part-time faculty member in recognition of their noteworthy work with and on behalf of students, scholarly or professional achievement and service to MCC.

The Leslie K. Morford Faculty Recognition Award, named for MCC emeritus instructor Morford, was presented to Business Instructor Bill Bishop. Part-time English Instructor Cheryl Meyer received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. The recipients were given a plaque, a stipend and a citation.

Bishop joined MCC as a full-time faculty member in 2013, teaching in the accounting and business programs.

“Education is a passion of his and he shares his experiences and extensive knowledge with his students. The students appreciate his enthusiasm of accounting and business by making it fun and easy for them to learn,” Carbonelli said. “For accountants, the first months of every year are extremely busy, and this holds true for Bill and his students. Each spring semester, students obtain a certification in preparing taxes. Once certified, Bill and the students volunteer by providing tax preparation services for members of our community.”

Bishop serves as the co-chair of the college’s Business Professionals of America student organization, a department chair, and member of both the curriculum and quality council committees. Outside of MCC, he serves as a member of an accounting organization, keeping abreast of new regulations and trends in the profession.

“We are fortunate to have such an outstanding instructor on our staff,” Carbonelli said.

Meyer has served as a part-time English instructor at the college since 2008.

“Students value Cheryl’s engaging assignments that permit them the ability to express their creativity while helping them grow as writers,” Carbonelli said. “Through these processes, students state that they feel more confident in their writing skills. Cheryl also has a way of making students feel comfortable in her classes so that they actively engage in classroom discussions.”

Meyer serves on the Kenneth J. Lehman Nature Trails Committee and organizes the annual Bramble Ramble Trail Run. In addition, she provides many nature-based instructional programs throughout the year.

“Her passion for education, running and the environment are evident in all that she does, and the college expresses deep appreciation to her for her commitment to the institution and its students,” Carbonelli said.
