Caesar’s 1st Shot raises money to support student-athletes at Montcalm Community College

Montcalm Community College’s Women’s Basketball Coach Jack Cribb won the opportunity to take the first shot on college’s new basketball court during Caesar’s 1st Shot, a June 14 event to raise money to support MCC’s Athletics Department.

It was the first unveiling of the new wood gym floor, complete with the Centurion logo, in preparation for the kickoff of athletics this fall.

“I probably haven’t felt that uneasy in my stomach since we were playing for a district championship,” Cribb said about the pressure to take the first shot.

During the event, guests could purchase tickets for a drawing for the chance to take the first shot, and Cribb had the winning ticket.

With more than 15 years of coaching experience with youth leagues, travel/UAA, middle school, and high school teams, Cribb said when the opportunity came to join MCC Centurion Athletics, he was excited to be involved with building a program from the ground up.

“I appreciate that sports bring people together,” he said. “Strong women make a strong community. I saw an opportunity that gives women a chance to shine.”

The event featured a chance for community members to meet student-athletes and coaches as well as a silent auction. More than $2,000 was raised during the event and proceeds benefit athletic scholarships at MCC.

“I think it’s a great start to hosting more events like this that bring businesses, the community, and families together,” Athletic Director Hunter Redman said. “It gives more opportunities to our student-athletes.”

Assistant Athletic Director Amanda Glaza is excited about the energy surrounding Centurion Athletics.

“I thought the event went really well, and it was great to see so many people from the community come to support athletics and the student-athletes,” Glaza said.

MCC is a member of the Michigan Community College Athletics Association (MCCAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). This fall, Centurion Athletics will make its debut in league play with Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Golf and Clay Target Shooting.
