The Centurion bowlers made the long trek to Merri-Bowl Lanes in Livonia on Friday, February 7, for the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Championship.

The Montcalm Community College men’s team placed fourth out of 10 teams with a final score of 9,046 pins. Schoolcraft College took the top spot with a pin total of 9,504. The format for the conference championship was slightly different from the regular season, as the bowlers also competed in singles and doubles events while also bowling two combined team games and four baker blocks. This deviates from the normal three combined team games and four baker blocks.

Sophomore Ethan Hopkins (Fenwick, Mich.) and Cooper Hoskins (Portland, Mich.) combined for the high doubles series of 1,242, placing seventh overall. Freshmen Jack McBride (Portland, Mich.) and Bradon Krohn (Fruitport, Mich.) finished shortly behind with a combined three-game series total of 1,201, placing 14th.

In the singles event, Krohn dominated the competition with a stellar series of 776 after bowling games of 279, 267 and 230, finishing 55-pins ahead of the second-place bowler. Unfortunately, due to MCC’s continued probationary status as a new program, Krohn and the entire Centurions team were not qualified for any conference awards or All-MCCAA recognition during the tournament. The Centurions’ probationary status is expected to end next season.

Hoskins also finished in the top 10 in the singles tournament, placing eighth with a series of 661 after bowling games of 224, 246 and 191. With the two combined team games accounted for, Krohn finished with an eight-game series of 1,817, leading all 65 bowlers. Meanwhile, Hoskins’ eight-game series total was 1,726, placing him eighth among all bowlers.

For the doubles tournament, each team took their top two doubles teams, leading to a total of 2,443 for MCC. The Centurions’ singles score, combining their top five player totals, was 3,041. Their combined team scores were 901 and 1,097, while the team also bowled baker blocks of 325, 396, 415 and 428.

The MCC women’s team placed sixth out of nine teams with a pin total of 6,108. Jackson College placed first with a team total of 8,485 pins. The Centurions placed themselves in the bottom half from the start with a doubles total of 1,882, followed by a singles total of 1,904. They bowled combined team games of 619 and 669, followed by baker block scores of 236, 227, 266 and 255.

The doubles team of Zoey Guernsey (Ionia, Mich.) and Madyson Hartman (St. Louis, Mich.) combined for a doubles tournament total of 1,113 — sixth best among the 29 doubles teams. Guernsey placed 30th in the singles tournament with a three-game series of 469 (164, 170, 135) while sophomore Aubrey Marlin finished just behind Guernsey in 31st with a series of 467 (169, 163, 135). With Guernsey’s great doubles games of 231 and 201, it helped to boost her eight-game series to a total of 1,370, placing her 15th overall.

The Centurions will compete in the Region XII Bowling Championship at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at the Royal Scot Bowling Center in Lansing.
