Dual Enrollment

The Dual Enrollment program at Montcalm Community College allows you to enroll in up to 10 college classes throughout your high school career. Successful completion of a college course grants you college credit as well as satisfies one of your high school graduation requirements, either a core requirement or an elective requirement, depending on the college course taken. Always refer to your high school counselor for specifics about course requirements.

1

The dual enrollment program is a partnership with the high school, and we work very closely with the high school counselors to plan your participation with the program. If you are interested in the program, talk to your counselor to see if you would be eligible to participate.

Placement Assessment

For most classes at MCC, most dual enrollment students are not required to submit test scores as their high school will check their eligibility based on the State of Michigan Dual Enrollment requirements.

Level 5 Math courses or higher as well as any computer related (CMIS, CPGM, or CNET) courses will require adequate test scores based on MCC’s requirements. Follow the steps below to submit your PSAT or SAT or schedule our ACCUPLACER assessment only if you are interested in the above listed courses.

PSAT/SAT

Visit the College Board website at collegeboard.org to download your free official PSAT or SAT Full Score Report and send the PDF as an attachment to dualenrollment@montcalm.edu and your high school counselor.

Fill out a Dual Enrollment Authorization Form

The Dual Enrollment Authorization form serves as a contract between the student and parents/guardians, the high school and MCC. Please complete the Online Dual Enrollment Authorization form with the specific class sections you wish to be registered for. After you sign this online form, it will automatically be emailed to your high school counselor for approval. Once approved, MCC will register you for your classes. If you would like to make changes to your class registration, please complete an entirely new form. You will receive an email confirmation once MCC has registered you.

*** You can't complete the authorization form if you haven't completed step three above.

Class Information

Dual enrollment students can search for classes themselves online in MyMontcalm. If you are logged in to MyMontcalm, select Search Classes and Register, and then Course Search. If you are not logged in to MyMontcalm, select Course Search. Here you can find all available courses for the semester.

If you scroll down to Campus and choose your high school, you can search for MCC classes hosted at your high school.

6

Check your course schedule

Login to MyMontcalm. On the Student Home page scroll down to My Course Schedule. Make sure your course schedule matches the classes you selected for the semester.

7

Purchase Books

Most MCC classes will require a textbook. The MCC Bookstore, in the Activities Building on our Sidney campus and operated by Follett, has all the essentials you need to attend classes. If you have funds from your high school allotment available on your MCC account, the funds are only available from the time that Bookstore Charges Begin until Bookstore Charges End. Visit montcalm.edu/academic-calendar for specific dates.

At the MCC Bookstore

You can visit the MCC Bookstore without an appointment Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. To make purchasing books and supplies easier when you visit the MCC bookstore, be sure to bring along the following items:

  •  Current course schedule

  • MCC student ID (Visit Student Services to have one made)

  • Some form of payment

While some high schools provide Dual Enrollment students with funds for books, it is not always sufficient to cover the full cost. Always come prepared with some form of payment.

  • Make sure you check your MyMontcalm student account, Canvas and MCC email frequently.

  • Check your course syllabus for all class policies. Instructor's policies vary on attendance, late assignments, absences and performance.

  • If you're struggling in your class, set up a time to talk with your instructor, high school counselor, and/or MCC Dual Enrollment Admissions Representative.

  • Visit the math center, writing center and/or schedule tutoring appointments as needed.

Please note: Cheating and plagiarism of any kind is not tolerated at MCC.

After High School Graduation

Continuing at MCC

If you would like to attend classes as a traditional MCC student after high school graduation, you do not need to re-apply. You simply need to fill out an Electronic Change of Program Form in My Montcalm.

  • Visit my.montcalm.edu.

  • Select Handouts-Forms from the gray box on the left and then Change of Program.

  • Contact the Student Services Department at (989) 328-1277 or studentservices@montcalm.edu to assist with this transition.

Transferring to Another Institution

If you wish to transfer your credits to another college or university, you will need to request an official copy of your transcript be sent to that institution at montcalm.edu/transcripts.

The key to a successful transfer is to know where you will transfer, your degree goal, and what that college suggests you take at MCC. Please work directly with the future institution to make sure the classes you take through Dual Enrollment not only transfer, but are also helpful toward your long-term goal. To learn more about how your courses transfer to other institutions, visit https://www.mitransfer.org/search-courses.

Privacy

Signing the Dual Enrollment authorization form grants permission for the Montcalm Community College Student Services Office to share grades, attendance, and account information with your high school and parents. Parents need to provide your name, MCC Student ID number or birthdate, and the last four digits of your social security number to gain access to this information. MCC instructors are only permitted to discuss academic information with you. Parents may not contact instructors requesting information about your performance in class.

Eligibility

Dual Enrollment is available if you are enrolled in at least one high school course and have not been in high school for more than four years. You must also meet specific test score targets and/or the specific eligibility requirements set by your high school. The two main tests utilized to gauge readiness for college level course work are the SAT or the ACCUPLACER.

A district may elect to support your enrollment in a subject area for which you have not yet achieved a qualifying score or utilize a different test if it has been determined to be in your best educational interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

The number varies by program, but most students take two or three classes per semester depending on how early they get started in high school and how the college classes fit within the high school schedule time blocks. Local school districts will pay for up to 10 courses for eligible students during their overall high school career unless students are in Early Middle College.

  1. Anyone in high school that has met the benchmark scores put in place by their high school

  2. Anyone that has not been in high school for more than 4 years.

  3. Anyone that is enrolled in at least one class at their high school.

A dual enrolled student may take any credit earning course that we offer except for those in divinity, theology, religious education, and physical education. A student must also complete any graduation requirements and if there are AP classes offered, they just take those first.

If a student is planning to finish an associate’s degree at MCC, we can start them in one of our programs. A student that knows they are transferring to a college or university after high school should work with that school directly to find out which of our classes would be most beneficial for transfer. If a student is undecided, they may take a class that seems interesting to them, or we have a helpful tool called the Michigan Transfer Agreement. This agreement is a list of 9 classes that if a student receives a C or better in those classes will transfer to another participating MI college or university without issue. There are always exceptions to this rule, so it’s good to have some transfer school options in mind.

We offer classes in many different formats.

Online: your class is a completely online platform. No specified day or time to meet with classmates and instructors. You will have deadlines you need to meet.

LOL: Live online is an online format that you will meet with your class for online lecture using Microsoft Teams, it’s a lot like Zoom or Google Meets. Your assignments will still be due online.

In-Person at the Sidney or Greenville campus: Student may take classes at either our Sidney or Greenville campus. We offer morning, afternoon and evening classes.

In-person at your high school: For Greenville High School students that would be our Greenville campus.

Dropping: may be done before the drop date published on MCC’s academic calendar. This date is published for one week after the start of semester. To drop a class students must consult their high school counselor and MCC’s Admission Representative to remove the course from their schedule. This must be completed before the published drop date. If the drop is requested in time all tuition will be repaid to the high school. However, your student may receive a bill in the mail if they used some of the funds to purchase a textbook.

Withdrawing: Students must first consult their high school counselor to inform them of their intention to withdrawal. Each course has its own withdrawal date which can be found by checking the course syllabus. After consultation with high school counselor the student is responsible for contacting their instructor via email informing them of their intentions to withdraw. Their instructor will reply with their consent or denial of the withdrawal and an email will be sent to Student Services, studentservices@montcalm.edu.

If you fail or choose to withdraw from your class, the student will be responsible for paying back the tuition. To put it into perspective. ENGL100 is a 3-credit class that costs roughly $500.

Everyday.

By completing the authorization form. The form cannot be completed until after a student has logged into their student account.

No. A student that wants to continue with MCC after high school graduation is welcome to complete a Change of Program. The Change of Program form can be found in MyMontcalm under Academics>>Forms.

MCC classes are not cancelled often due to weather. If a student is taking a class at a high school campus and that high school closes, the college class will be cancelled. If the high school has an in-service or early release day when students are not attending but the building is open, they are still required to attend the college class. If your student is taking a college class outside of the high school, they are required to attend all scheduled class periods, regardless of schedule taking place at the high school. If MCC has a snow day or the instructor cancels class, they are not required to attend class that day. In the event of any cancellation or missed class, students should always check their Canvas site for instruction from their instructors.
