“What Lincoln had to say …” is the first of two presentations in Montcalm Community College’s spring Lifelong Learners educational series.
Step into history with presenter Steve Charnley, retired United Methodist Pastor and Adjunct Instructor at Montcalm Community College, and meet Abraham Lincoln as he reflects on a pivotal time in America’s past. Through stories and insight, you will explore the challenges and ideas that shaped the nation in the years leading up to the Civil War — including debates around immigration and identity that still echo today.
You will hear how these experiences influenced Lincoln’s leadership and his 1864 re-election campaign, where he shared a hopeful vision for the country’s future. It’s an engaging, thought-provoking presentation that brings history to life — and invites you to see it in a fresh way.
The presentation is Friday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in room G129 in the Stanley and Blanche Ash Technology and Learning Center (Ash TLC) on MCC’s Greenville campus. The cost is $5 and may be paid in cash at the door.
Grand Rapids Chief Tour Ambassador Caroline Cook will explore how one visionary mind left a lasting mark on an entire neighborhood during her presentation, “Heritage Hill & Frank Lloyd Wright,” on Friday, June 5.
While small in stature, Frank Lloyd Wright is big in legend. His contribution to architecture is so big, in fact, that he created a style that became the basis of 20th century residential design in the United States.
Join us for an engaging presentation on Frank Lloyd Wright and his surprising connection to Heritage Hill Historic District in Grand Rapids. Though best known for revolutionizing modern residential design, Wright’s influence can also be found woven into the charm of this predominantly Victorian-era community.
Through fascinating stories and local insights, Cook will explore Wright’s legacy — from a home officially attributed to him, to others inspired by his unmistakable style. You’ll gain a fresh appreciation for how great design ideas travel, evolve, and quietly shape the places we live.
Whether you love architecture, local history, or simply a good story, this is a presentation you won’t want to miss! It is Friday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in room G129 in the Ash TLC on MCC’s Greenville campus. The cost is $5 and may be paid in cash at the door.
