MCC cross country runner running

If you ask him, Jeryn Frisbie would say everything went according to plan, and with the results from the MCCAA Championships at Bay College Friday, Oct. 2, no one would argue.

The Montcalm Community College cross country freshman finished first place at the event, earning a personal record (PR) 8K time of 27 minutes, 31.9 seconds, beating his previous record by 15 seconds. He pulled away from Muskegon’s Hayden Fox, who finished second in 28:06.6.

Frisbie’s teammate, Elijah Quigley, placed 18th, finishing in 32:35.9, rounding out the Centurions’ scoring.

Montcalm finished fifth out of six teams with 125 points. Muskegon claimed the team title with 23 points, followed by North Central Michigan (68), Kirtland (80), Bay (81), MCC (125) and Alpena (130).

“For me personally, everything went how it was planned and I executed it perfectly to win the race,” Frisbie said. “For the new PR, I’m expecting to keep lowering those as the season goes.”

Centurions head coach Nate “Q” Van Holten was highly impressed with how Frisbie performed.

“He had great execution,” Van Holten said. “The PR was a bonus as we were only looking for him to win the race. I knew he had the ability to do it. I just wanted to see if he could stay patient and execute our plan. And he did.”

WOMEN’S RACE

On the women’s side, MCC was led by Shelly Zimmerman (Cedar Springs, Mich.), who placed 19th in the 5K with a time of 22:47.8. Joslyn Dickman (Alma, Mich.) finished 23rd (24:01.3); Logan Trygstad (Sheridan, Mich.) 25th (24:51.1); Karly Fisk (Sand Lake, Mich.) 27th (25:32.0); Mallory Miller (Baldwin, Mich.) 31st (27:30.1), Izzy Mojica (Wyoming, Mich.) 32nd (27:36.4), and Emma Morris (Decatur, Mich.) 33rd (42:52.0).

Muskegon won the women’s championship with 18 points, followed by North Central Michigan College (44), Bay College (82), Kirtland Community College (103), and MCC (121).

Van Holten said all of his women runners were impressive in this meet.

“Shelly and Emma had good PRs,” he said. “The others all had season bests. We’re moving in the right direction, but I still feel there's more to give.”

The Centurions’ next meet will be the Jayhawk Invite at Muskegon Community College Saturday, Oct. 17.

Van Holten will be looking for his squad to build on their success from the MCCAA championships.

“We are definitely improving. We’re still not at the rate I've been hoping, however,” Van Holten said. “I’m hoping to apply the two to three weeks of good training they have put in and finally hit bigger results.”

The Jayhawk Invite, which will be held at Muskegon Community College’s public golf course in Muskegon, begins at noon.
