During a study abroad trip to Costa Rica in 2024, Lariah Tissue heard a piece of advice that has stuck with her ever since — “Always say yes to experiences.”
Tissue, from Sheridan, has taken that advice to heart and it has led her to plenty of opportunities in just the last couple of years. From internships to involvement in student clubs and even a study abroad session in Northern Ireland, Tissue has yet to regret saying yes to experiences.
Her latest yes was agreeing to run as a candidate for Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Regional Officer. Tissue campaigned alongside several other candidates at the PTK Michigan Regional Convention May 1-2 at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island. When the campaigning finished, Tissue was elected as one of four Regional Officers for the 2026-27 school year. Tissue said being elected felt like a weight being lifted off her shoulders.
“When I found out I could run for PTK Regional Officer, I thought back to ‘Always say yes to experiences,’” Tissue recalled. “It pushed me to go after the opportunity in front of me because, honestly, what is the worst that could happen if I just tried?”
Tissue became MCC’s first PTK Regional Officer since the 2012-2013 school year. Being the first in 14 years to represent MCC on a state level made her reflect on her gratitude for the opportunities MCC has provided.
“I’m so grateful for the professional internships, studying abroad and building important connections through networking events,” Tissue said. “I’m so thankful for my professors that I’ve had along the way and all of the great connections I’ve made through my classes.”
Tissue was joined at the conference by her PTK co-advisors of the Alpha Tau Alpha Chapter — Sara Rittersdorf and Jennifer VanderSlik. Rittersdorf made mention of just how much Tissue has grown in her role since the start of the year and how much of a privilege it’s been to watch her blossom.
“I have a feeling this is only the beginning,” Rittersdorf said. “I have seen so much of her personality come out and she is growing into a terrific leader. I can’t wait to see what this year brings.”
On the ferry to Mackinac Island, VanderSlik was a bit anxious as she saw some timid behavior from Tissue. But those nerves quickly quashed upon entering the conference.
“She enthusiastically connected with attendees during the political rally, delivered an outstanding speech on the Honors Study Topic despite her fear of public speaking, and answered questions during the candidate caucus with both professionalism and genuine personality,” VanderSlik recalled. “Watching her growth over the course of just a few days was incredible and we know this achievement is only the beginning of what she will accomplish both personally and in the Michigan Region of Phi Theta Kappa.”
Tissue will have several responsibilities as Regional Officer, including overseeing regional projects, communicating with chapter officers, attending all regional meetings, encouraging academic excellence and overall promotion of PTK. She plans to put her own flair on her service this year, working on her studies in crop and soil sciences and agricultural operations.
“I would also like to contribute to saving the environment,” she said. “My studies are very environmentally based, so I would like to anchor in my strength and apply it to PTK.”
She is excited about being an advocate for MCC and community colleges as a whole. Tissue’s experience with PTK has opened many doors and she credits much of her academic success to the organization.
“I wouldn’t have met and made such great connections without PTK,” Tissue said. “I feel like it has helped me gain confidence in my ability to network and enhanced my public speaking skills.”
Tissue mentioned how much of an enhanced community college experience she’s had at MCC given her involvement with the Green Council, Agriculture Club and PTK. She encouraged those who receive an invitation to join PTK to take advantage of the opportunity, sticking with her theme of saying yes to experiences.
“I understand some people might see the invitation and it can be deceiving at first glance, but I’d encourage anyone to reach out and join,” she said. “It’s so much more than getting a fancy stole at graduation. PTK is a lifelong friendship, networking opportunities and many adventures.”
