The MCC Centurions opened their season Friday, Jan. 9, at Kingpin Lanes in Plymouth, Ind. As part of the Marian University Ancilla Charger Invitational.

Both the men’s and women’s teams finished fourth out of five teams at the first tournament of the season. Each team’s members bowled three individual games, followed by four baker blocks, where bowlers from each team alternate to bowl two frames within a single game. Each baker block consists of two baker games for a total of eight baker games.

The Centurions’ men’s team finished fourth with a final score of 3,270, finishing ahead of the hosting Chargers. Jackson College placed first with a team total of 4,111. The Centurions topped out with a baker block of 278 in block No. 2, while their high for combined individual games came during game No. 3 with a score of 806.

Individually, sophomore Bradon Krohn (Fruitport, Mich.) continued where he left off from his tremendous freshman season, finishing first place individually with a three-game series of 618. He showed remarkable consistency throughout the three games, bowling 201, 211 and 206. Of the 96 games bowled by 32 bowlers, only 11 200-point games were bowled — with Krohn owning three of them. Following Krohn was fellow sophomore Joey Gonzalez (Greenville, Mich.), who finished with a series of 462, highlighted by a game of 200 in his third try.

The Centurions’ women’s team finished with a team total of 3,028, good for fourth place in a competitive tournament. Jackson College took first place on the women’s side, finishing with 3,277. The Centurions finished just behind the hosting Chargers, who took third with a score of 3,051. MCC started strong with combined individual scores of 680 and 750 but fell slightly behind the pace in the baker block games.

Sophomore Madyson Hartman (St. Louis, Mich.) led the women’s team with a high individual game of 198 — the best among the 75 games bowled from the women at the tournament. Hartman led the Centurions with a three-game series of 483 — third best among individuals. She was followed by freshman teammate Nicole Hollabaugh (Ithaca, Mich.), who secured a series total of 463 (181, 168, 114).

The bowling teams will be back on the lanes on Friday, Jan. 16 at the Muskegon Community College Invitational.
