The Montcalm Community College men’s and women’s bowling teams competed at the Region XII Championship Friday, February 20, at the Royal Scot Bowling Center in Lansing. 

The men’s team placed seventh out of 11 teams while the women’s team also finished seventh out of 10 teams in attendance.  

Each individual participant bowled eight games — three singles games, three doubles games and two team games, where their combined individual scores were accumulated for a team score. Team scores were also determined by adding four baker blocks, each containing two baker games. 

The Centurions’ men’s team finished with a final pin total of 7,179, finishing just behind the 7,244 total of Muskegon Community College. Jackson College won the regional tournament with a final total of 7,992. The highly competitive tournament field featured three teams within 100 pins from the top spot as Kellogg Community College finished second (7,909) and Edison State Community College finished third (7,898). 

During the singles portion of the competition, sophomore Joey Gonzalez (Greenville, Mich.) finished second out of 67 total bowlers in attendance with a three-game series of 615, bowling games of 233, 182 and 200. Gonzalez was second to Ian Sayler of Edison State Community College, who bowled a series of 627 (213, 182, 232).  

The men's team placed fifth in the singles portion collectively with a total of 2,551, but stumbled in the doubles portion, finishing with a total of 1,793, 10th-best in the field. Austin Wichert (Vestaburg, Mich.) and Gonzalez led the team in the doubles portion with a combined three-game series of 931. 

Individually, Gonzalez finished the highest for the men’s team with a final eight-game series total of 1,451, finishing 10th overall. Sophomore Bradon Krohn (Fruitport, Mich.) finished just behind Gonzalez in 11th place with a total of 1,431. 

The Centurions’ women’s team finished with a pin total of 6,175, just behind the total of Muskegon Community College (6,192). Mid Michigan College won the regional tournament with a team total of 7,200 pins, beating Kellogg Community College by almost 400 pins. 

Sophomore Madyson Hartman (St. Louis, Mich.) led the Centurions in the singles portion with a three-game series of 437 (147, 117, 173). Hartman teamed up with freshman Madison Moran (Stanton, Mich.) to lead the team for the doubles portion with a score of 890. Hartman was the overall individual leader for the Centurions, bowling an eight-game series of 1,261, finishing 11th out of 56 bowlers in attendance. Hartman was followed by freshman Amaya Farr (Greenville, Mich.) who finished 26th with a total of 1,094. 

The Centurions men’s and women’s bowling teams will have a brief break before returning to the Royal Scot Bowling Center in Lansing for the NJCAA DII National Championship, starting Thursday, March 5 and ending Saturday, March 7.
