The Montcalm Community College men’s and women’s bowling teams finished the season on Saturday, March 7, at the NJCAA Bowling National Championship, taking place at the Royal Scot Bowling Center in Lansing.
The women’s team placed ninth out of 17 teams in attendance, while the men’s team placed 18th out of 22 teams participating. The NJCAA Bowling National Championship consists of each participant bowling three singles games, three doubles games and six combined team games for their individual scores. In addition, three baker blocks, consisting of two baker games each, factor into the final team score.
At the end of the three-day event, the Centurions women’s team finished with a total of 10,316. Barton Community College won the event with a final total score of 12,025.
The team was led individually by sophomore Madyson Hartman (St. Louis, Mich.), who finished with a 12-game series total of 2,009, placing 18th out of 84 bowlers in the field. Madison Ninneman of Iowa Central Community College won the individual national championship with a final total of 2,320 — finishing almost 100 pins ahead of second place, Sydney Nichols of Jackson College (2,233). Hartman averaged 167 per game during the tournament, including one game over 200 during the first block of team games. Freshman Madison Moran (Stanton, Mich.) was second for the Centurions, placing 30th overall with a 12-game series of 1,912.
The men’s team finished with a team total of 10,428. Rock Valley College took home the national championship after posting a team total of 13,910, finishing just ahead of the 13,560 total posted by second-place Iowa Western Community College.
MCC sophomore Bradon Krohn (Fruitport, Mich.) led the Centurions with a 12-game series of 2,242, placing 31st out of a field of 137 bowlers. Krohn started strong, bowling 235 in his first singles game, but eventually settled in with an average of 187. Evan Daly of Mid Michigan College was named national champion, placing first for his 12-game series of 2,592 — bowling 10 of his 12 games over 200. Krohn’s next closest teammate was sophomore Joey Gonzalez (Greenville, Mich.), who finished 66th with a 12-game series of 1,946. Freshman Austin Wichert (Vestaburg, Mich.) finished just behind Gonzalez in 69th place with a series total of 1,919.
