Helping Your Students Use the Writing CenterView a list of tips for helping your students understand how to make effective use of the Writing Center.

Tours/Class Visit FormFaculty are welcome to bring their classes into the Writing Center for a tour during the first three weeks of the fall and spring semesters. Please call or stop in to set up a time. If you would like a writing center consultant to visit one of your classes, please complete the Tours/Class Visit form, and we will contact you to schedule a visit.

Writing center syllabus StatementIf you’d like to make mention of the Writing Center in your syllabus, feel free to copy/paste (or modify) this Writing Center syllabus statement.

Print Resources for StudentsThe Writing Center houses a growing collection of print resources including dictionaries, thesauri, writing handbooks, MLA and APA manuals, and a variety of handouts. Students do not need an appointment to use these materials. They may simply stop in during open hours, as space allows.

Peer Response VideoPeer response, when done well, is an effective practice because it gives writers an idea of how an audience will react to their writing, and it can drive meaningful revision. However, students sometimes find the process uncomfortable or frustrating. If you have students writing papers and you’re interested in using peer response in your class, you may find this Peer Response video helpful. Developed by the writing center at Lansing Community College, this video was designed to teach students to work effectively in peer response writing groups.

Proof of Visit/student reflectionSometimes instructors require students to visit the Writing Center, either as a general requirement or for extra credit. We encourage faculty who need evidence of Writing Center visits to ask students for the date and time of their visit, the first name of the Writing Consultant, and a brief description of the assistance they received. Alternately, please copy/paste (or modify) this student reflection form. Writing Center consultants won’t “sign off” on student papers; however, the Writing Center keeps a record of every consultation, so you can always contact us if you need verification of a visit.
